About
This piece was inspired by my mother. We would read every night and when the winter came around we would switch to shadow books. The problem with doing personal work is that it can be hard for your audience to project onto. With that in mind, I wanted to play with the idea of generality. For example, the mother and child on the cover can be interpreted as my mother or yours, when in actuality it is Julie Andrews and her daughter. I also wanted to play with how the senses affect memory. The tactility of the pages mixed with the projections through the cutouts allows the viewer to immerse themselves in the work. I also was interested in how smell can be utilized in art. I treated some of the pages with scented wax. It was to help preserve the thin book pages but to also add to the sensory experience. Scent is said to be one of the strongest ways to evoke memories. I also find the idea of a fragile interactive piece interesting.
